TONY OURSLER.
Last term I wrote my 4000 word essay on how video is used as installation, which also informed my own practise as at the time we were building a large installation as part of a group project. I focused on works by Oursler and other artists such as Kutlug Ataman, Vito Acconci and David Hall, all famous in their own right. I analysed Oursler’s 1994 ‘Judy’ exhibtion, which explored mutiple personality disorder through surface projection and audio. Oursler creates psycho dramas through is projections of actors and actresses onto the pillow heads of stuffed bodies. The characters are suspended and one is hidden under a sofa which is propped up. He creates an experience rather then simply an aesthetic piece to be admired. If anything the work is quite difficult to experience! Throughout his career he has also projected moving films of blinking eyes onto spheres and odd shapes, moving image into non-gallery sites and has seemingly brought inanimate objects to life often to convey quite dark topics.
